Clif Bar and Company – the leader in all-natural and organic energy bars and nutrition foods and drinks – recently moved into their new 115,000 square foot energy efficient headquarters.
Located in Emeryville, California, the company used reclaimed materials – like recycled denim to create sound-absorbing panels – along with solar thermal panels on the roof that will provide 70 percent of the heat necessary for their hot water. The site of a former valve manufacturing plant, the new eco-friendly building will boast what Clif Bar and Company says will be he largest "smart" solar array in North America. It isn’t the largest solar array on the North American continent BUT it will generate 6 to 8 percent more power than a standard solar array. It should supply almost 100 percent of the building’s electricity needs.

This is one of the first buildings in California to follow the 2008 California Building Energy Efficiency Standards. The company is seeking a LEED Platinum certification, the highest "green" building rating available, featuring solar power and energy conservation measures such as their R&D kitchen, energy efficient office equipment, four atrium gardens within the interior office space to bring in natural light and reclaimed wood from sources like container crates, railroad ties and barns.
Always marching to a different drummer, the new Cllif Bar HQ’s "artwork" consists of repurposed bikes, kayaks, snowboards and surfboards that hang from the ceiling..

Clif Bar and Company’s eco-friendly new building epitomizes the company’s five core values or "aspirations": sustaining the planet, its people, its business, the community and its brands. The new headquarters features a 40-foot bouldering wall, a yoga room, dance studio, on-site fitness trainers, two massage rooms, and a hair salon. Employees with young children can take advantage of a 6,700 square foot childcare center for infants to five year olds. Then there’s the employee-operated cafĂ© that uses organic ingredients from area farms and a company theatre that seats 350 people.
All in all, sounds like an exceptional environment to work (play?) in. Kudos to Clif Bar’s founder and co-CEO Gary Erickson for staying true to his vision while maintaining a first rate, multi-million dollar company that produces awesome products.
